Scott Baumann
Founder, Managing Partner
Scott formed MAT-CS in 2009 after gaining over 25 years of experience in materials characterization and surface analysis. Having served as a lab manager and analyst, he built a broad network of laboratory contacts while designing hundreds of experiments, and analyzing thousands of samples. Scott is an expert with years of lab experience performing RBS, SIMS, XRF, TXRF, XRR, and AFM analysis and a wide variety of materials ranging from semiconductors to polymers and glasses. He has also taught over 20 classes on materials characterization techniques and has extensive knowledge of techniques such as AES, XPS, GDMS, FTIR, GCMS, and more.
Debbie Hess, PhD
Partner, Senior Analytical Chemist
Debbie Hess, Ph.D. is a partner at MAT-CS and an analytical chemist with over 24 years of hands-on laboratory experience. Debbie graduated from Saint’s Mary College with a BS in Chemistry, and a minor in Spanish, and is a loyal University of Notre Dame fan (Go Irish). She earned her PhD at the University of Texas at Austin specializing in high vacuum surface science. She began her industry career as an R&D scientist using XPS, AES, FT-IR, GC-MS, and SEM/EDS supporting oil & gas and semiconductor industries. She joined MAT-CS in 2013 to work one-on-one with clients to resolve problems with the best methods and partner labs. Her expertise covers petrochemicals, nanotechnology, food, resins and molded plastics, aerospace materials, pharmaceuticals & nutraceuticals, and medical devices. Debbie has been an active member of local American Chemical Society (ACS) sections for 30+ years.
Christopher Andren
Senior Technical Specialist
Christopher Andren is an analytical chemist proficient in laboratory operations, instrumental analysis, polymer chemistry, material sciences, and solutions-based consultative technical sales. He began his career in an engineered materials research position and has over 25 years of laboratory experience involving the application, operation, and data interpretation of wide variety of analytical techniques including spectroscopic, chromatographic, thermal, microscopy, and physical testing. During his career, Chris has collaborated directly with lead technical and managerial personnel in the manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, litigation, medical device, and pharmaceutical industries. He enjoys the challenge of applying problem-solving skills to understand an issue, then design, manage, and effectively communicate project results to his clients.
Heidi Magid
